Alberta Innovates nanoWorks Program

nanoWorks is a key piece of the Alberta Nanotechnology Strategy, through which nanotechnology research and commercialization collaboration initiatives are undertaken with industry partners to yield nano-enabled solutions to industrial challenges and build a strong nanotechnology industry sector in Alberta. nanoWorks delivers funds jointly with industry to increase industry’s access to Alberta’s micro-nano-technology (MNT) infrastructure, and stimulate industry-institutional research and product development collaborations. The program, also aims to increase the number and quality of innovation and implementation teams in Alberta that lead to successful new MNT products and MNT product-based companies.

Call for Proposals
nanoWorks next call for Expressions of Collaborations will be announced at a future date. Details of the program are available in the document below:

Future applications must focus on nano-enabled products and applications specific to energy and environment, health and medical technologies or agriculture and forestry sectors. They will also require well-defined project descriptions that clearly articulate the industry problems they address, the roles of industry and research partners and the level of industry investment. More information can be found in the program guide.

Vision
To provide a key component for an effective innovation system, forming the basis for the mutual exchange of knowledge and capacity between all elements crucial for sustainable growth of Alberta’s economy.

Mission
To facilitate the adaptation of product-driven technologies, processes and knowledge related to nanotechnology to solve complex challenges faced by Alberta’s industries.

Goal
To stimulate the establishment of industry-driven solution-oriented partnerships, which include industry, academia and research institutions, to facilitate the adaptation of product-driven technologies, processes and knowledge related to nanotechnology by Alberta’s industries.

Strategies

  • Market the Alberta Innovates nanoWorks program and Alberta nanotech resources to drive the number of high-quality applications
  • Fund product development consortia that result in the establishment of nano-enabled products and processes, micro-nano-technology (MNT) products-based companies and MNT infrastructure
  • Increase the number and quality of innovation and implementation teams that lead to successful new MNT products

Guiding Principles
The Alberta Innovates nanoWorks program is committed to the following guiding principles:

  • Being good stewards of public funds and taking accountability for our expenditures
  • Making funding decisions in time periods appropriate to industry needs
  • Maintaining standards of excellence in the adjudication of project proposals
  • Ensuring that good project management practices are followed in the administration of funded projects
  • Protecting the confidentiality of applicants
  • Aligning with Alberta’s Nanotechnology Strategy and Accelerating Innovation in Alberta Strategy

These principles will guide Tech Futures in the effective operations of the Alberta Innovates nanoWorks program, and will lead toward meeting the program’s short term operational goals.
